Rory's Promise ๐Ÿค

Helping Rory's Living Cousins

Rory is a woolly rhinoceros โ€” and woolly rhinos are extinct. But Rory has five living cousins roaming the Earth today, and they need our help.

The Promise

Why this book series exists

Long ago, woolly rhinoceroses like Rory walked the frozen Earth. Today they live on only in stories โ€” and in fossils.

But the story doesn't have to end that way for their cousins. Five kinds of rhinoceros are roaming free in the wild, and every one of them needs friends. Some have only a few dozen left in the whole wide world.

Rory's Promise is simple: every Rory book helps children meet real rhinos, learn why they matter, and discover how families can help protect them. As the series grows, so will our giving โ€” because stories should leave the world better than they found it.

Why Rhinos Need Help

Gentle facts for young readers

๐Ÿฆ

Five Cousins Left

White, black, greater one-horned, Javan, and Sumatran โ€” five rhino species share our planet today.

๐Ÿ’›

Horns of Keratin

A rhino's horn is made of keratin โ€” the same stuff as your fingernails! Yet some people still hunt rhinos for them.

๐ŸŒ

Losing Their Homes

As forests and grasslands shrink, rhinos have fewer safe places to live and raise their babies.

๐Ÿ’ช

Rangers to the Rescue

Brave rangers guard rhinos day and night. They are real-life heroes โ€” and they need our support.

Ceratotherium simum

The biggest of all rhinos โ€” as heavy as a car! Despite the name, they're grey. They munch grass with their wide, square mouths.

Diceros bicornis
๐Ÿฆ Two hornsCritically Endangered

Also grey (the name is a mystery!). Their hooked upper lip works like a finger for picking tasty leaves off bushes.

Rhinoceros unicornis

Also called the Indian rhino. Their skin folds look like armor plates โ€” nature's own suit of armor! Great swimmers, too.

Rhinoceros sondaicus
๐Ÿฆ One small hornCritically Endangered

The rarest large mammal on Earth. Every single Javan rhino alive lives in one national park on the island of Java.

Sumatran rhinoceros illustration

Sumatran Rhinoceros

Dicerorhinus sumatrensis
๐Ÿฆ Two hornsCritically Endangered

The smallest โ€” and hairiest! โ€” rhino, with a shaggy reddish-brown coat. Rory's closest living cousin!

Home: Rainforests of Indonesia ยท Left in the wild: fewer than 100

๐Ÿฆ Did you know? A rhino's horn is made of keratin โ€” the same stuff as your fingernails. It isn't magic medicine; it's just hair! Yet rhinos are hunted for their horns. That's why they need friends like you.
